Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.
The short answer
On the first night you usually cannot tell, so record it instead of guessing. Note when you opened it, photograph the packing label and map the flat zones, then check again at the end of the window the maker gives.
- Still settling: flat zones fill in over time.
- Report: no change, missing filling, open seam.
- Avoid: heat, beating or opening it.
11:40 p.m., and one side is flat
Vacuum packed pillows often come out of the plastic lopsided. The question is not whether it looks uneven tonight, but whether it changes.
11:40 p.m.
I was 25 weeks and had waited all week for it. I cut the plastic on the bedroom floor and it unrolled with a sigh. The back part puffed up right away. The front part, the bit meant for under my bump, stayed thin and creased like a deflated pool float.
I pressed it, folded it, sat on the bed staring at it. Was it still waking up, or was it just made that way? I did not want to wait two weeks and then find out I had used it too long to complain. And I did not want to email the seller over nothing at midnight.
You do not have to decide tonight. You just have to write down what you see tonight.
Is it still expanding, or is something wrong?
A pillow that is still expanding changes over the hours and days after opening. A problem is a flat zone that does not change, or a change you can see, like an open seam or filling bunched at one end.
| You notice | Often still settling | Worth reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Flat zone | Getting fuller each time you check | Same height at the end of the maker's window |
| Creases | Softening from fold lines | Hard ridges that stay |
| Filling | Even under your hand, just compressed | Empty pockets, or a lump of filling at one end |
| Seams and case | Closed and intact | Open seam, torn inner case, filling showing |
| Shape | Matches the listing photos, only thinner | A different shape or a missing part |
How long expanding takes is set by the maker, and it differs between pillows. Look for the time on the packaging, the insert card or the product page. If you cannot find one, ask the seller what it is for your model.
What should you record when you open the box?
Record three things on night one: when you opened it, what the packing label says, and how it looked straight out of the plastic. These are the details that are impossible to get back later.
- Time and date. Write the time you cut the plastic. A phone photo stores it for you.
- The packing label. Photograph every label on the box and the plastic: order number, model, size, color and any batch or date code.
- As it arrived. One photo of the package before you open it, one of the pillow still rolled, one right after it unrolls.
- What is in the box. Lay out every piece, cover and strap together and photograph them. Check them against the listing.
- Keep the packaging until you are sure it is fine. Box, plastic and any insert card.
How do you map the flat zones?
Split the pillow into zones and measure each one with a ruler, from the same spot, at opening and again later. A map turns "it looks flat" into numbers a seller can act on.

| Zone | At opening (in) | Next morning (in) | End of maker's window (in) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Flat zone | Creases, lumps | |||
| B. Same zone, other side | ||||
| C. A full zone | Your reference |
- Lay it flat on the floor or a table, cover off if it comes off.
- Stand a ruler next to each zone and photograph at eye level.
- Shoot from the same spot and the same light each time.
- Mark the zones with a sticky note so you measure the same place.
If zone A is catching up with zone C, it is waking up. If the gap stays the same, that is your answer.
What should you not do while you wait?
Do not heat it, beat it, wash it or open it unless the maker's instructions say so. Those shortcuts can damage the filling and make it harder to show the pillow arrived that way.
- No hair dryer, radiator or clothes dryer, unless the label allows it.
- No hitting it against the floor or the bed.
- No opening the zip of the inner case or a seam to move filling.
- Gentle hand fluffing is fine only if the care instructions allow it. One maker's care note, for example, says to fluff a clumped or flat pillow as you would any other pillow.
- Do not sleep on it every night through the waiting period if your seller's terms say unused. Read that line first.
When and how do you contact the seller?
Contact them as soon as you see an open seam, missing filling or a wrong part, and otherwise when the maker's window ends with no change. Send everything in one message.
A message you can copy: "Order [number], opened [date, time]. Zone [A] measured [x] in at opening and [y] in after [time], against [z] in for the rest. Photos attached: packing label, pillow as it arrived, zone map. Is this expected for this model, and what are my options?"
Vanessa measured three zones that night and twice more. The back zone stayed put. The front zone came up a little, then stopped well short. She sent the photos and the three rows of numbers on the third day. The seller asked one question and sent a replacement. The new one went on her bed the same week, front zone full.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a pregnancy pillow take to expand?
It depends on the pillow, and makers set their own time. Look for it on the packaging, insert card or product page, and ask the seller if you cannot find it.
Why is one side of my new pregnancy pillow flat?
It may still be recovering from the vacuum packing, or the filling may be uneven or short in that part. Measuring that zone over time against a full zone shows which.
Can I put a vacuum packed pillow in the dryer to fluff it?
Only if the care label allows it. Heat can damage some fillings and may affect a claim with the seller.
Should I sleep on it while it expands?
Check the seller's return condition first. If returns must be unused, sleeping on it may end your return, so wait or ask.
What should I photograph when a new pillow arrives?
The package unopened, every label, the pillow still rolled, the pillow just unrolled, and all the parts laid out together, with the date and time.
If your new pillow is a Relvay set
Relvay sells the 3-Piece, two wedges and a flat strap. If yours arrives damaged or faulty, email support@relvay.com with your order number and a photo or short video. We send a replacement and you do not need to post the first one back. For your zone map, each wedge measures about 4 inches thick at its outer edge, by our supplier's measurement.
Two wedges for bump and back, joined by a flat strap, about as wide as your torso. Keep a regular pillow between your knees. $79.99, 90-day returns.
