Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.
The short answer
Choose for the morning, not only the night. On a sofa bed, a pregnancy pillow has to fit the open mattress, then leave the bed's folding parts clear and fit a clean storage spot every day. Map both states before you buy anything.
- Keep it if it has a daily spot and the routine is quick.
- Rethink it if it lives on the floor or in the mechanism.
- Check both manuals: sofa bed and pillow.
11:40 p.m., unfolding the bed again
Most people who sleep on a sofa bed in pregnancy hit the same wall: the pillow that works at night has nowhere to go in the morning. This is what that daily loop feels like.
11:40 p.m.
I was 30 weeks. Every night Jonah moved the coffee table, pulled the seat cushions off, and unfolded the bed while I stood there too tired to help. Then I went to the closet and wrestled out the pillow. It was a big U, and it came out of that closet like a sleeping bag that did not want to go.
By the time it was on the mattress, I was wide awake. In the morning we did it all backwards. Fold the pillow, shove it in the closet, close the bed, cushions back on, table back. Twenty minutes, every single day, before coffee.
Some mornings I just left it on the couch. Then a friend came over and sat on it, and I spent the whole visit wondering if it would ever look the same again.
- If your pillow spends the day squashed into a closet it does not fit...
- If you have caught yourself folding the bed with the pillow still half on it...
- If the pillow ends up on the floor while you make the couch...
- If the morning tidy takes longer than your shower...
You are not messy. Your pillow was chosen for a bedroom, and you live in a room that changes twice a day.

What most of us try first
Most people try the closet, the couch, the storage ottoman, then giving up the pillow. Each one solves the night or the day, and costs the other.
- The closet. It fit, technically, if I folded it in half and leaned on the door. Every evening it came out creased and lopsided, and every morning I lost ten minutes to it.Somewhere to put it, but a fight twice a day.
- Leaving it on the couch. No folding at all. But the couch was our living room. Friends sat on it, the cat slept on it, and it collected crumbs I then slept on.No effort, but no clean spot.
- Squeezing it into the sofa bed.One morning I tried closing the bed with the pillow folded on the mattress. The frame would not shut, and I was scared I had bent something.Fast, and the one thing you should not do.
- Going back to regular pillows. They stacked neatly on a shelf. But at night they drifted apart, and I spent the dark rebuilding them on a mattress with a bar under the middle.Easy to store, hard to sleep on.

Why is a pregnancy pillow harder to live with in a sofa bed room?
Because the pillow has to pass three tests every day, not one: fit the open bed, stay clear of the folding parts, and fit a clean daytime spot you can reach without a fight.
The night footprintYour half of a sofa bed mattress, which is often thinner and shorter than a regular bed, with the frame close by.
The fold zoneThe mattress, hinges and frame that move when the bed closes. Bedding and pillows left there can stop it closing.
The day spotA clean, dry place off the floor that the pillow actually fits, plus the number of moves to get it there.

Most pillow guides only measure the first one. In a room that turns back into a living room, the second and third decide whether you keep using the pillow at all.
The question is not whether the pillow fits the bed. It is whether it fits the morning.
That is the shift that gave Harlow her mornings back without giving up her pillow at night. First the room map and the free fixes, then what she switched to.
How do you map a sofa bed room for night and day?
Draw the room twice: once with the bed open and once with it closed. Then mark where the pillow sleeps, where it lives by day, and what has to stay empty in between.
- Measure your sleeping half. Open the bed and measure the mattress width and length, then halve the width if you share it.
- Mark the fold zone. Open and close the bed once slowly. Note every part that moves, folds or tucks under. Nothing should be left there.
- Find the day spot. A shelf, closet shelf, chair, lidded basket or storage ottoman. Measure its inside, not its outside.
- Measure the pillow folded the way you would really fold it, without pressing hard. Compare it with the day spot.
- Count the moves. Pillow out, bed open, pillow on, then the reverse. Fewer than five moves is easy to keep up. Ten is a chore you will start skipping.
- Time one morning. If the pillow part takes longer than two minutes, write down where the time goes.
Can you make your current pillow work without buying anything?
Often, yes. A fixed daily spot, a fixed order of moves and a cover or bag for daytime solve most of the friction.
- Give it one home. Same spot every day, off the floor. A cleared closet shelf or a chair in the corner works better than wherever there is space today.
- Take it off first, put it on last. The pillow leaves the mattress before anyone touches the mechanism, and goes back only once the bed is fully open.
- Use a big laundry or storage bag. It keeps the pillow clean by day and gives you one handle to carry it.
- Fold it the same way every time. A consistent fold creases less than a different squash each morning.
- Split the jobs. If you share the room, one person does the bed and one does the pillow.
- Read the sofa bed manual. Some makers, such as Maisons du Monde, say not to leave pillows or other objects inside the mechanism when closing. Others, such as Resource Furniture, allow most bedding to stay but still say to remove bed pillows.
Before you vacuum pack or compress your pillow to make it fit, check its care label. Squashing it every day is different from storing it for months.
When is a different pillow worth it in a sofa bed room?
A different pillow is worth it when your current one has no daytime home that it actually fits, or the morning routine has become a reason to skip it at night. Tick the ones that sound like your week:
- The pillow lives on the floor or the couch during the day.
- It does not fit any closet, shelf or box without forcing it.
- I have closed, or nearly closed, the bed with it on the mattress.
- The morning pillow routine takes more than a few minutes.
- Some nights I sleep without it because getting it out is too much.
- On the open sofa bed, it leaves my partner no room.
Two or more? The pillow is costing you more than it gives, and a setup that breaks into smaller pieces is worth a look.
Pain that keeps you awake, or that gets worse, is something to raise with your midwife or doctor. A pillow is a comfort aid, not a treatment, and a sofa bed may not suit every stage of pregnancy.
How much room does each pillow type take, day and night?
Full-length pillows take the most room on both shifts. A typical U pillow is about 59 to 63 inches long and 28 to 31 inches wide, which is close to a whole person's half of a queen and wider than many sofa bed halves.
| Regular pillows | U or C pillow | Long body pillow | Two small wedges joined by a strap | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Night footprint | Flexible | Most of your half | Long strip beside you | About your torso width |
| Day storage | Shelf stack | Large closet space | Long closet or corner | Shelf, chair or basket |
| Morning moves | Several | One big, awkward one | One long one | One small one |
| Stays put on a thin mattress | Drifts | Yes | Can slide | Pieces joined |
| Fold zone risk | Low, easy to remove | High, easy to leave on | Medium | Low, easy to lift off |
Measure the day spot before you choose. A pillow that only fits your closet when you lean on the door does not fit it.
What changed when the pillow fit the morning?
When the pillow came in two small pieces, the morning routine shrank to one move and the bed closed with nothing on it.
Harlow switched to two small wedges joined by a strap, with a regular pillow between her knees. At night it sat on her half of the sofa bed and Jonah kept his. In the morning she lifted the set off in one go and set it on the shelf above the radiator, bump wedge on top.
The bed closed first try. The cushions went back on. Two weeks later she noticed she had stopped dreading the evening, because the pillow came out of a shelf instead of a fight with the closet door.

Frequently asked questions
Where do you put a pregnancy pillow during the day in a small apartment?
Pick one fixed spot off the floor that it fits without forcing: a closet shelf, a chair, a lidded basket or a storage ottoman. Measure the inside of the spot and the pillow folded the way you really fold it.
Can I close my sofa bed with a pillow on it?
Check your sofa bed manual. Some makers say not to leave pillows or other objects in the mechanism when closing. Lifting the pillow off first is the safe habit either way.
Can I vacuum pack my pregnancy pillow every day?
Check the pillow's care label first. Daily compression is hard on many fillings, and long-term storage is a different job. If it only fits a spot when squashed, it does not really fit.
Is a U-shaped pillow too big for a sofa bed?
Often, if you share it. A typical U pillow is about 28 to 31 inches wide, and many sofa bed mattresses are narrower than a regular bed. Measure your half first.
Can I use a pregnancy pillow on a sofa bed mattress at all?
Usually, as long as it fits your half and you lift it off before closing the bed. If the mattress or bar under it makes sleep painful, talk to your midwife or doctor about your sleep setup.
Where the Relvay 3-Piece pillow fits in
The Relvay 3-Piece is the two-wedge set from Harlow's story. It is built from small pieces, so by day it can sit on a shelf or a chair instead of filling a closet, and you lift it off the sofa bed in one move before the bed closes.
1. The bump wedgeA crescent-shaped wedge that tucks under your bump, thin edge toward your belly button, so the weight is not pulling on your back.
2. The back wedgeThe same shape, snug against your lower back so it has something to rest against.
3. The strap and small cushionA flat strap runs under you and joins the two wedges, so they stay together instead of drifting apart. A small oval cushion sits on the strap between them. You can set the distance as the bump grows.
Each wedge is about 17 by 13 inches and about 4 inches thick at its outer edge, tapering thinner toward your body (supplier measurement). Opened out, the set is roughly as wide as your torso, so it stays on your half of the bed and you keep your normal head pillow. Soft ribbed pink fabric on top, white sides. It is small enough to pack for a trip.

What it does not do: it does not go between your knees. Keep a regular pillow there, the way the NHS suggests. That combination covers all three points without a giant pillow.
Probably not for you if
- Your current pillow already has a daily spot and a quick routine.
- You want one pillow that also holds your knees and head.
- Your sofa bed mattress is painful whatever pillow you use.
Made for you if
- You ticked two or more boxes above.
- Your pillow has to leave the bed every morning.
- You have a shelf, chair or basket but no big closet.
