Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.
The short answer
Pick one goal, fix one setup, and take a two-minute note each morning until a decision date set well before your return deadline. Judge the pillow on your goal across the whole trial, not on one great or awful night.
- Before night one: confirm the return terms and deadline.
- During: change one thing at most, then wait.
- Stop early if it hurts. Do not sit it out.
How do you set up a useful pillow trial at home?
Six steps before the first night. They take about fifteen minutes and save you from deciding on the worst morning of the week.
- Confirm the return terms. The deadline, whether you can wash the cover, what packaging you need and who pays return shipping. Our guide to reading pregnancy pillow return terms covers what to look for.
- Write one goal in one sentence. "Stop rebuilding pillows at night." "Partner keeps his side of the bed." "Fewer wake-ups from my hips." One goal is easier to judge than five.
- Fix the setup. Follow the pillow's instructions, take a photo, and keep it that way for the first few nights.
- Choose your morning notes. Four short answers, below. Keep a notebook or phone note by the bed.
- Set a decision date. At least a week before the deadline, so you have time to pack and send it back if needed.
- Write your stop rule. For example: "If my hips are sore two mornings in a row, I stop and go back to my old setup."
| Morning note | What to write |
|---|---|
| Goal | Better, same or worse than before the pillow |
| Fixing at night | How many times you woke to move something |
| Effort | Easy, okay or a struggle: turning, getting up, making the bed |
| Care | Anything that needed washing, rearranging or untangling |
| Anything else | Heartburn, a late night, a hot room |
Why does one night feel great and the next feel bad?
Because the pillow is only one of many things that change from night to night in pregnancy. Bathroom trips, heartburn, a hot room, a late dinner and plain tiredness all move your sleep, so single nights are noisy.
Night 4, 1:30 a.m.
I was 25 weeks. Night one with the new pillow I slept five hours straight and told Marco it was a miracle. Night two I was up four times. Night three I moved the pillow, changed the sheets and switched sides, all at once, because I was desperate.
By night four I had no idea what was working. I lay there doing maths on the return date and realised I had spent more energy judging the pillow than sleeping on it.
- If you change something every night because last night was bad...
- If your opinion of the pillow depends on how this morning went...
- If you are not sure whether you are still inside the return window...

Vivian did not need a better pillow that week. She needed a fairer test.
One night tells you about that night. Your notes across the trial tell you about the pillow.
How do you decide whether to keep or return the pillow?
On your decision date, read your notes against your one goal. Most mornings better means keep. Better with one part wrong means one adjustment and a few more nights. Same or worse means return.
| Your notes show | Decision |
|---|---|
| Goal better on most mornings | Keep it |
| Better, but one spot keeps bothering you | Make one change, run 3 more nights, decide before the deadline |
| Goal the same as before | Return it. Your old setup was doing the same job |
| Goal better, but effort or care is too much | Your call. A pillow you dread handling is a cost too |
| Worse, or your stop rule triggered | Stop and return it |

Make the one adjustment count. Change only the part your notes point to, and write down what you changed so the next nights are comparable.
What should a home trial not do?
A trial is not something to endure. There is no number of uncomfortable nights you owe a pillow, and your notes are a comfort log, not medical evidence.
- Do not keep sleeping on something that hurts to reach the end of the trial.
- Do not read better scores as proof that a pillow is fixing a medical problem.
- Do not wait for the trial to end before raising pain, poor sleep or worry with your midwife or doctor.
- Do not let the deadline pass while you decide. Set the date and stick to it.
The NHS suggests side sleeping with pillows under your bump and between your knees, and regular pillows can do that. If the trial shows a new pillow is not beating your old setup, going back to it is a fine result.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I try a pregnancy pillow before returning it?
There is no set number of nights. Set a decision date at least a week before the return deadline, keep the setup fixed, and decide on your notes. Stop sooner if it hurts.
Why do I sleep well one night and badly the next with my new pillow?
Many things change night to night in pregnancy: bathroom trips, heartburn, room temperature, tiredness. Judge the pillow on your goal across the whole trial, not on single nights.
Should I adjust my pregnancy pillow during the trial?
Keep the setup fixed for the first few nights, then make at most one change your notes point to, and run a few more nights before deciding.
Can I wash the pillow cover during a trial?
Check the return terms first. Some sellers only accept returns in original condition. Ask before you wash if you are not sure.
What if the pillow helps but is hard to handle?
Count that too. Effort turning, getting up or making the bed is part of whether a pillow suits you. Weigh it against your goal on the decision date.
