The short answer
Afternoon naps are fine for many pregnant people, but late or long ones can leave you wide awake at bedtime. Instead of following a rule, test one rest window for a few days and watch what it does to your night.
- Rest counts even without sleep.
- Earlier and shorter is the usual first adjustment.
- Needing long naps every day is worth mentioning to your midwife.
Is it okay to sleep in the afternoon during pregnancy?
For most people, yes. The NHS suggests resting as much as you can during pregnancy. It also suggests avoiding afternoon or evening naps if they leave you not feeling tired at bedtime. So the real answer depends on what a nap does to your night.
That is why advice online seems to contradict itself. One page says nap every day. Another says skip naps to sleep better. Both can be right, for different people, on different days.

I was 24 weeks and working the register five days a week. Thirty minutes for lunch, no chair in the break room worth sitting in. By the time I got home I was so done that I lay down on the couch "for a minute" and woke up at seven, groggy and hungry.
Then midnight came and I was staring at the ceiling. Every single time. I was napping because I was exhausted, and I was exhausted partly because I was napping. I could not see a way out that did not involve quitting my job.

You do not need a perfect schedule. You need one rest window that fits your day and does not cost you the night.
What counts as rest when you can't nap at work?
Rest does not have to be sleep. Ten minutes with your feet up and eyes closed, a quiet walk, or lying down without trying to drop off can all take the edge off without the grogginess a long nap can bring.
- Feet up on your break. The NHS suggests sitting with your feet up during the day when you can.
- Eyes closed in a parked car with the seat tipped back and a phone alarm set.
- A short walk outside at lunch, if movement wakes you up more than sitting does.
- Lying down after work with a timer, on top of the covers, lights on.
- Weekend rest planned in, not only caught when you crash.
If your work hours make any rest hard, it may be worth asking about changes. Our pregnancy sleep and shift work checklist helps you prepare that conversation.
How do you test which rest window works for you?
Pick one window, try it for three or four days, and write down two things: how you felt straight after, and how bedtime and the night went. Then try the next window and compare.
| Window | What I did | Roughly how long | Groggy after? | Sleepy at bedtime? | Night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lunch break | Car, seat back, alarm | 15 min | A little | Yes | Woke once |
| Straight after work | Couch, no alarm | 75 min | Very | No, awake till 1 | Woke three times |
| Straight after work | Lay down, timer, lights on | 25 min | No | Yes | Woke twice |
| Weekend | Bed after lunch | 40 min | A little | Yes | Fine |
- Change one thing at a time. Window, length or place. Not all three.
- Always set an alarm. "A minute on the couch" is how 75 minutes happens.
- Judge by the night, not the nap. A nap that feels great but costs you two hours at midnight is not a good trade.
- Keep your notes for your midwife. If you need long rest every day no matter what, that is useful for them to see.
How long should a nap be when you're pregnant?
There is no set number that suits everyone. General sleep guides, such as the Sleep Foundation's, describe short naps of around 20 to 30 minutes as less likely to leave you groggy. Treat that as a starting point to test, not a rule.
Some days you will need more, especially in the early weeks or after a broken night. That is fine. What matters is the pattern across a week. If you need long naps every day and still feel exhausted, or you fall asleep without meaning to, read our guide to feeling very sleepy during pregnancy and bring your notes to your midwife or doctor.
What if naps are making your nights worse?
Move rest earlier and make it shorter before giving it up. Swapping a long evening nap for a short rest soon after work, or resting without sleeping, often keeps the benefit without the midnight ceiling stare.
- Earlier: rest closer to lunchtime or straight after work, not late evening.
- Shorter: set the alarm and get up when it goes off.
- Lighter: lie down with lights on, or sit with your feet up, instead of getting into bed.
- Earlier night instead: on some days, going to bed a little earlier works better than any nap.
Rebecca ran her trial over two weeks. The couch nap after work was the problem every time. The car rest at lunch was too short to matter much, but lying down for 25 minutes with a timer as soon as she got home, lights on, shoes off, left her sleepy again by ten.
She still had bad nights. But fewer of them started with her lying awake at midnight wondering why she could not sleep.
When should you mention daytime sleep to your care team?
Mention it if you need long naps every day and they do not help, if you fall asleep without choosing to, or if you cannot sleep at night no matter what you change. Your notes from the trial make that conversation quicker.
- You doze off at work, in conversation or as a passenger.
- You feel too sleepy to drive safely.
- Naps and early nights do not seem to help at all.
- Nights are bad whatever you do in the day. Our guide cannot sleep during pregnancy covers that conversation.
- You feel low, hopeless or anxious most of the time.
This trial helps you find a rest routine that fits your day. It is not a fix for sleep problems, and it does not replace advice from your midwife or doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Is it bad to sleep in the afternoon while pregnant?
Not for most people. Rest is part of looking after yourself in pregnancy. The NHS does suggest avoiding afternoon or evening naps if they leave you not tired at bedtime, so watch what naps do to your night.
What is the best time to nap during pregnancy?
There is no best time for everyone. Earlier in the day tends to interfere less with bedtime. Try one window for a few days and compare your nights.
Can I nap in my car on a lunch break?
Many people rest in a parked car with the seat tipped back. Set an alarm, keep it short, and make sure you feel fully awake before you drive anywhere.
Why do I wake up groggy after a nap?
Longer naps are more likely to leave you groggy. If it happens often, try shorter rest with an alarm, or rest without sleeping.
Should I stop napping if I can't sleep at night?
Try moving rest earlier and making it shorter first. If nights stay bad whatever you change, talk to your midwife or doctor and bring your notes.
If your nights are broken by turning and getting comfortable, not by naps, our pregnancy pillow buying checklist helps you compare support options calmly.
