Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.
The short answer
A pregnancy pillow can give your back support and comfort while you sleep on your side, but it is not a treatment. Health claims like "relieves back pain" need real studies of that product. Fit claims you can check yourself.
- Be wary of: pain relief promises backed only by reviews.
- Check: size of each part, what is inside, return terms.
- Call first: if back pain is severe, new or comes with other symptoms.
What can a pillow honestly do for pregnancy back pain?
It can give your back something to rest against while you sleep on your side. That is comfort and support, not treatment, and a listing that promises more should be able to show you why.
The NHS calls back pain in pregnancy very common. Ligaments soften as your body gets ready for birth, which can strain the joints of the lower back and pelvis. Its tips include rest, a mattress that supports you properly, and keeping your back supported, with maternity support pillows mentioned for sitting.
11:40 p.m.
I was 24 weeks, sitting on the edge of the bed with one hand on my lower back, scrolling. "Relieves back pain overnight." "Recommended by doctors." "Tested by experts." Every pillow said some version of it. One had forty thousand reviews and a photo of a woman sleeping like a cloud.
I wanted to believe all of it. I also could not tell which of those sentences meant anything. I put the phone down and lay there, aching, with eleven tabs open.
"At 20 weeks pregnant I have been having alot of back pain due to no pillow support." Pregnancy pillow customer review, babybub.com
The ache is real. That is exactly why the claims deserve a closer look.
Which back pain claims need which evidence? A side-by-side table
Health claims need the strongest evidence. Fit and material claims you can mostly check yourself. The US Federal Trade Commission says health claims for products need competent and reliable scientific evidence, and that customer testimonials are never enough on their own.
| Claim you see | What kind of claim | What it would need | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Relieves back pain" | Health benefit | Well-run human studies of this product, ideally with a comparison group | Which study? On this exact pillow? With pregnant people? |
| "Tested" or "backed by research" | Evidence claim | The study itself: who, how many, compared with what | Can you send the study, not a summary of it? |
| "Recommended by doctors" | Endorsement | Named, qualified people who examined the product, with any payment disclosed | Who exactly, and were they paid? |
| "Aligns your spine" | Design claim that sounds medical | A plain description of what supports where; studies if it promises a health result | Which part sits where on my body? |
| "Thousands of 5-star reviews" | Testimonial | Reviews show experiences, not proof | What do the 1 to 3 star reviews say? |
| "Supports bump and back" | Fit claim | Measurements and photos of it in use | How big is each part, in inches? |
| "Memory foam" or "premium filling" | Material claim | A written material list | What is inside, layer by layer? |

The FTC guidance also says a study should match the product being sold, and that a marketer has to weigh all the relevant research, not just the studies that look good. So "a study found pillows help" is not the same as "a study found this pillow helps."
The louder the health promise, the more proof it owes you. The quiet fit claims are the ones you can actually check.
What do the main pillow types offer for back support?
Each type puts something behind your back in a different way, and none has been shown to be the best for back pain. Choose by fit, bed space and how often you turn and get up.
| Type | Back support | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Regular pillows | One pushed in behind your lower back | Free, but it can drift when you turn |
| U-shaped | One side runs the length of your back | Takes a lot of bed; turning means turning inside it |
| C or J-shaped | The curve sits behind you or in front | Check which side ends up behind your back |
| Single wedge | Small and firm, one spot | Holds your back or your bump, not both |
| Two wedges joined by a strap | One behind the lower back, one under the bump | Small; you still need a pillow for head and knees |
Whatever the type, the question is the same: does the support stay where your back needs it through the night, on your bed, with your partner? That is something a few nights will tell you better than any adjective.
Which back pain is a care team question, not a shopping question?
Contact your midwife or doctor urgently if you are in the second or third trimester and back pain comes on in a new way, or comes with fever, bleeding, pain when you pee, or pain under the ribs on one or both sides. The NHS lists these as reasons not to wait.
- Back pain in the second or third trimester can be a sign of early labour.
- Fever, vaginal bleeding or pain when you pee alongside back pain.
- Pain in one or both sides, under the ribs.
- Loss of feeling in one or both legs, your bottom or your genitals: the NHS says call emergency services.
For back pain that is simply very painful, the NHS says to talk to your doctor or midwife, who may refer you to a physical therapist for advice and exercises. If the pain is at the front of the pelvis or makes turning in bed hard, read turning in bed with pelvic girdle pain. For pain on the outside of the hip, see hip pain at night in pregnancy.
How do you test a back support claim in your own bed?
Use the return window as your trial: same bed, at least a week or two, and a few notes on how you wake. You are judging comfort and fit, not running a medical test.
- Read the terms first. How many nights? Who pays return shipping? Does it have to be unused, or in its cover?
- Write a baseline. Two or three nights of notes before it arrives: when your back aches, how often you wake, how you get up.
- Set it up as the maker shows. Then adjust to your body, not the photo.
- Keep the same notes. Same questions, same bed, so you compare like with like.
- Decide before the window closes. Put the last return date in your calendar on day one.
If your notes show no change, that is a real answer. Send it back and spend the energy on the conversation with your care team instead.
What changed when Savannah stopped reading the promises?
She shopped by fit and terms instead of slogans, and she took the back pain itself to her midwife. The two together did more than any listing promised.
Savannah closed nine of the eleven tabs. The two she kept listed the size of every part and had a return window long enough to sleep on. Her midwife pressed on the sore spot, asked when it was worst, and referred her to a physical therapist for exercises. A few weeks later she said the nights felt more manageable, and that the best part was not having to decode a sales page at midnight.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of pillow is best for pregnancy back pain?
No type has been shown to be best. Many people sleep on their side with something behind the lower back, something under the bump and a pillow between the knees. Pick by fit, bed space and return terms, and talk to your care team about the pain itself.
Can a pregnancy pillow get rid of back pain?
Be careful with any listing that says so. A pillow can make resting more comfortable, but claims of pain relief need studies of that product, and reviews alone do not count as proof.
Should I sleep with a pillow behind my back while pregnant?
Many side sleepers find it comfortable to have support behind the lower back. Ask your midwife or physical therapist what suits your body, especially if your pain is strong.
When is back pain in pregnancy serious?
Contact your midwife or doctor urgently if back pain comes with fever, bleeding, pain when you pee, pain under the ribs, or if you are in the second or third trimester and it could be early labour. Loss of feeling in your legs or bottom needs emergency help.
