Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.

The short answer

The filling changes how you handle the pillow, not just how soft it is. Each type shifts, weighs, sounds and washes differently.

  • Fiberfill: light and squashy, can flatten or clump over months.
  • Foam: holds its shape; shredded foam can be reshaped, solid foam cannot.
  • Microbeads: mould around you; check bead size, sound and refill options.

Why does the filling matter more than the shape?

Two pillows with the same shape can behave like different objects. The filling decides whether the pillow keeps its height, follows your hands when you push it, or slowly drifts to one end.

3:05 a.m.

I was 30 weeks and I had become a pillow mechanic. Every night I punched the soft end of my long pillow, folded it in half, and wedged it under my bump. By three it was flat again and all the stuffing had wandered to the far end.

Ryan bought me a firm foam wedge to fix it. That one never went flat. It also never moved where I needed it, and I could not fold it, squash it or shape it. One pillow did too little and the other would not listen to me.

I had spent weeks thinking about shapes. Nobody had told me to think about what was inside.

The shape is what you see. The filling is what you live with.

How do fiber, foam and microbead fillings compare?

Here is how the four common fillings usually behave. Treat each cell as a question to confirm on the exact model, because blends and bead sizes vary.

If you are deciding how firm a pillow should feel, that is a separate question with its own test. See how firm a pregnancy pillow should feel.

Is polyester fiberfill a good pregnancy pillow filling?

Fiberfill is the most common filling because it is light, soft and cheap to make. It suits you if you like to squash and fold your pillow.

The weak spot is time. Over months of nightly use, loose fiber can compress, thin out in the places you lean on most, or migrate inside a long pillow. A pillow with internal stitching or separate chambers holds fill in place better than one big open tube. Ask whether the insert has a zip so you can fluff or redistribute it.

Shredded foam or solid foam: what is the difference?

Shredded foam is loose pieces you can push around; a solid foam block keeps one fixed shape. Both hold height better than loose fiber.

Shredded memory foam can feel heavy in a long pillow, so check the weight before you order if lifting and turning it is already hard. Memory foam also responds to temperature and comes back slowly after you press it, which some people love and some find sticky.

Solid foam is common in small wedges. It will not go flat under your bump, but you cannot fold it to a lower height either. Many foam inserts are spot-clean only, so the cover does all the washing work.

Are microbead pregnancy pillows worth it?

Microbeads suit you if you want a pillow that moulds to your shape and that you can top up later. They are light and flow like fine sand when you press them.

Ask three things. How fine are the beads, since sellers say finer beads are quieter? Is there a refill for that exact model? And is the inner case strong, so beads stay inside when the cover is off? One reviewer of a well-known bead pillow described a slight noise only if you listen carefully. If you wake at every sound, read how to check a pillow for noise first.

What about natural fillings like kapok, wool or spelt?

They exist and some makers offer them as an option. Each changes weight, sound and care, so treat them like any other filling and ask for the care rules in writing.

Kapok is a light plant fiber, wool fill is often adjustable, and husk fills such as spelt are heavier and make a gentle crunch. Natural does not tell you anything about allergies on its own. If you have a known allergy, check the full material list with your doctor.

What should you ask the seller about the filling?

Ask for answers you can check, not adjectives. "Premium fill" and "cloud-like" tell you nothing.

  • What is the filling, by name, and is it the same in every part?
  • How much does the pillow weigh?
  • Can I open it to add, remove or redistribute fill?
  • Is a refill sold for this exact model?
  • Can the insert be washed, or only the cover?
  • How long can I try it and still return it?

Caitlin asked those six questions before her second order. She ended up with support she could reshape for her bump, a regular pillow between her knees, and no more 3 a.m. punching. "I stopped fixing the pillow," she said, "and started sleeping on it."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best filling for a pregnancy pillow?

It depends on what you want to do with it. Fiberfill is light and squashy, shredded foam can be reshaped, solid foam keeps a fixed height, and microbeads mould to you and can often be topped up.

Why does my pregnancy pillow go flat?

Loose fiber filling compresses and drifts with nightly use, especially in long open tubes. If the insert has a zip, redistribute or top it up. If not, the pillow may be near the end of its supportive life.

Are microbead pillows noisy?

Many make a soft sound when the beads shift. Sellers say finer beads are quieter. If you are sensitive to sound, ask about bead size and check the return window.

Is a memory foam pregnancy pillow heavy?

Shredded memory foam in a long pillow can be heavy. Small solid foam wedges are usually lighter. Ask for the weight before you order.

Can you wash the filling of a pregnancy pillow?

Sometimes. Some inserts can be washed, many foam and bead inserts are cover-wash only. Follow the care label for the insert, not just the cover.

Where the Relvay 3-Piece fits in

Relvay does not sell a long body pillow or a refillable bead pillow, so if you want either, this is not it. Our 3-Piece is a different approach: two small wedges joined by a strap, one under the bump and one behind the back, so there is less pillow to lift and nothing long for fill to drift along. We have not yet published the fill weight on the product page, so if the filling decides it for you, email us before you order.
