Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.
The short answer
A stored pregnancy pillow can often be used again, but check it before you sleep on it. Find the label and model, inspect the cover and the inner pillow separately, count the parts, then test the fit for the body you have now.
- Keep it if it is clean, dry, complete and still fits.
- Fix it if only the cover or one part is the problem.
- Stop at damp, mildew, leaks or a missing label.
Is it okay to reuse a pregnancy pillow for a second pregnancy?
Often, yes, if it was stored clean and dry and it passes a check today. There is no single expiry date for pregnancy pillows, so the answer comes from the pillow in front of you, not from how many years it has been.
Sunday, 7:15 p.m.
I was 18 weeks with our second, and Noah, our toddler, had finally gone down. I pulled the big bag off the top shelf of the hall closet, feeling smug. One thing I did not have to buy.
Then I opened it. The cover had a faint yellow line along one seam. The little cushion that went with it was nowhere. One end of the main pillow felt flatter than I remembered. I stood in the hallway holding it and realized I had no idea what I was looking at. Was it fine? Was it gross? Was the missing cushion important?
I did not need a new pillow that night. I needed a list.

Storage does not decide if a pillow is still good. Twenty minutes of checking does.
What should you check when you take a stored pillow out?
Check six things in order and write each result down: label, smell and damp, cover, inner pillow, parts, and fit. Stop at the first serious problem.

- Label and model. Find the sewn-in tag. Photograph the brand, model name, any batch or lot code and the care instructions. If the tag is gone, write down anything you remember about where you bought it.
- Smell and damp. Open it in a dry room. Squeeze the thickest part. Cool, heavy or musty means moisture got in.
- Cover. Zip runs end to end, seams closed, no thin patches, stains or holes.
- Inner pillow. Take the cover off. Look for stains, spots and lumps. Press along every seam for gaps or leaking filling.
- Parts. Lay out every piece: extra cushions, straps, inserts, spare cover, storage bag. Compare with the photo or listing from when you bought it.
- Hardware. Zips, Velcro and buckles close properly and have no sharp corners poking through.
If it was vacuum packed, give it time to recover before judging the shape. Our guide to storing a pregnancy pillow between uses explains why that can take days.
What goes on the unpacking record?
One short note per pillow: what it is, what you found, and what you decided. It takes five minutes and saves you guessing next time, or when you pass it on.
| Item | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Brand and model | From the tag, or "tag missing" | C-shaped body pillow, model on tag photo |
| Batch or lot code | If printed on the tag | Photo saved |
| Stored | Where, how, how long | Hall closet, fabric bag, 2 years |
| Cover | Condition and care label | Seam mark, washable per label |
| Inner pillow | Smell, stains, filling | Dry, one end flatter |
| Parts | Present or missing | Small cushion missing |
| Fit now | Result of the test night | Bump support needs to sit lower |
| Decision | Keep, fix or stop | Fix: wash cover, replace cushion |
While you have the tag photo, search the brand and model on the CPSC recalls page or the safety authority where you bought it. It takes a minute, and any notice will tell you exactly which models and codes it covers.
Which findings mean keep, fix or stop?
Cover problems can usually be fixed. Damp, mildew and leaking filling inside the main pillow usually cannot, so those mean stop.
| What you find | Decision | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dry, clean, complete, label present | Keep | Wash the cover per label, then test a night |
| Stained or worn cover, sound inner | Fix | Wash or replace the cover if the maker sells one |
| One part missing | Fix or rethink | Check if the maker sells it, or if a regular pillow does the same job |
| Musty smell, damp, spots | Stop | Do not sleep on it until it is handled; see cleaning guidance or retire it |
| Split seams, leaking filling | Stop | Retire it |
| No label at all | Ask, then decide | Without care instructions, cleaning is a guess |
Washing is not a reset button. A wash can clean a cover, but it does not bring back flattened filling, and many inner pillows are spot clean only. For cleaning, follow how to wash a pregnancy pillow and the label. If it fails, our guide on retiring an unusable pregnancy pillow covers what comes next.
Will it still fit this pregnancy?
Maybe not in the same way. Your body, your bed and your sleep can all be different this time, so test the fit as if the pillow were new.
- Lie on your usual side and check under the bump, behind the back and between the knees.
- Check it still suits your bed, especially if you moved or share with a toddler some nights.
- Notice getting out of bed. Second pregnancies often come with a small person who needs you at 3 a.m.
- Try three nights before deciding.
Callie washed the cover, aired the main pillow for two days, and wrote everything on a sticky note inside the closet door. The missing cushion turned out not to matter: a regular pillow between her knees did the same job. The pillow passed. The note stayed, in case there is ever a third.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse my pregnancy pillow for my second baby?
Often yes, if it was stored clean and dry and passes a check: label present, no musty smell or damp, sound seams, all parts there, and it still fits your body this time.
How long does a pregnancy pillow last?
There is no single lifespan. It depends on the filling, how it was used and how it was stored. Judge the pillow in front of you, not its age.
My stored pregnancy pillow smells musty. Can I still use it?
Not until it is dealt with. A musty smell usually means moisture got in. Follow the care label; if the inner pillow is spot clean only, you may not be able to get it out.
Should I wash a pregnancy pillow after storage?
Wash the cover the way its label says before first use. Wash the inner pillow only if the label allows it, and dry it fully.
Do I need to check for recalls on an old pillow?
It is worth one minute. Search the brand and model on the CPSC recalls page or your local safety authority, using the details on the tag.
If the stored pillow does not pass
If your old pillow failed the check, start with our pregnancy pillow buying checklist before ordering anything. If what you need this time is bump and back support that stays on your half of the bed, the Relvay 3-Piece is the set we make. It is not a full body or C pillow, so if that is what you loved last time, it is not a like-for-like replacement.
Two wedges for bump and back, joined by a flat strap, about as wide as your torso. Keep a regular pillow between your knees. $79.99, 90-day returns.
