Relvay makes a pregnancy pillow. We also tell you below when you should not buy one.

The short answer

You can often use a pregnancy pillow on the sofa for daytime rest, but check it against the sofa, not the bed. Seat depth, armrests, overhang and how you stand up all change on a sofa. Also check whether your model's maker describes sitting or resting as a use.

  • Use it if it fits the seat and you stand up freely.
  • Rethink it if it hangs off or blocks your way up.
  • Ask your midwife if sitting keeps hurting.

How do you check a pregnancy pillow on your sofa?

Run six quick checks with the pillow and the sofa you actually have. It takes ten minutes and a tape measure.

  1. Read your pillow's instructions. Look for how the maker describes its use: sleeping, sitting, resting or feeding. If it only mentions sleep, treat sofa use as your own experiment.
  2. Measure the seat depth. From the front edge of the seat cushion to the back cushion. Compare it with the width of the pillow part that sits on the seat.
  3. Check the arms. Will the end of the pillow rest on the seat, or prop up against the armrest and push back at you?
  4. Look for overhang. No part of the pillow should hang off the front edge where it can slide down or catch your feet.
  5. Test the way up. From your resting position, can you sit up and stand without climbing over the pillow or pulling on it?
  6. Rest for twenty minutes. Then note your back, hips and neck. A setup that feels fine for two minutes can feel different after twenty.

Why does a pillow that fits the bed feel wrong on the sofa?

A sofa seat is a different shape from half a bed. It is shallower, it has a back cushion pushing you forward and arms at each end, and you are usually half sitting, not lying flat.

6:20 p.m.

I was 27 weeks and my long body pillow had lost the fight with our full bed. Ben was hanging off the edge every night. So the pillow moved to the sofa, where I collapsed every day after work.

Except it did not fit there either. One end jammed against the arm and pushed my shoulder forward. The middle hung off the front of the seat. When I wanted to get up, I had to roll toward the edge and push the whole thing onto the floor first. Ben started calling it the second couch.

  • If you have to shove the pillow off before you can stand...
  • If one end folds up against the armrest every time...
  • If you end up sitting on the edge of the seat to make room for it...

The pillow was not wrong and neither was Celia. It had been measured against a bed, and the sofa was never part of the plan.

"I had previously bought one of those giant, bulky oval-shaped pregnancy pillows and was totally not a fan (and neither was my husband based on how much space it took up on the bed)"Amazon review of a pregnancy pillow

A pillow fits a piece of furniture, not just a body. Change the furniture and you have to check again.

Is sitting or resting on the sofa an intended use for your pillow?

It depends on the model. Some makers describe their pillows for sleeping, sitting and feeding. Others only describe sleep. Do not assume one maker's advice applies to yours.

Read the instructions, care label and product page for your exact model. If sitting or resting is not mentioned, it is not forbidden, but you are the one judging the setup, so the six checks above matter more.

For sitting, the NHS advice for back pain in pregnancy is to keep your back straight and well supported. A pillow that pushes you forward or makes you slump is working against that, however soft it feels.

This is about short rests in the day. It is not a guide to sleeping the night on a sofa or recliner. If you are moving to the sofa because you cannot sleep in bed, that is worth telling your midwife or doctor about.

What can you change if the pillow does not fit the sofa?

Usually you can change how much of the pillow you use, not the whole pillow. Try one change at a time.

  • Use only part of it. If it bends or comes apart, use one section behind your back or under your bump and leave the rest off the sofa.
  • Turn the long side along the back cushion instead of across the seat, if the seat is too shallow.
  • Pick the end with the clear side. Rest with your head at the arm farthest from where you need to stand up.
  • Keep your feet clear. Nothing on the floor in front of the seat.
  • Stop if it still pulls you forward. A regular cushion behind your lower back may be all you need for an hour on the sofa.

If your back or pelvis keeps aching when you sit, talk to your midwife or GP. They can refer you to a physiotherapist.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a pregnancy pillow on the couch?

Often, yes, for daytime rest. Check that it fits the seat depth, does not hang off the front or fold against an arm, and that you can stand up without climbing over it.

Is it okay to sit with a pregnancy pillow?

It depends on the model. Some makers describe sitting or feeding uses, others only sleep. Read your pillow's instructions, and keep your back well supported, not pushed forward.

My body pillow is too big for my bed. Should I move it to the sofa?

You can try, but measure the sofa first. A seat is shallower than half a bed, so a long pillow often folds against an arm or hangs off the front.

Is it fine to sleep all night on the sofa while pregnant?

This guide is about short daytime rests. If you keep ending up on the sofa because bed is too uncomfortable, mention it to your midwife or doctor.

What if sitting on the sofa hurts my back or pelvis?

Try a regular cushion behind your lower back and keep your back supported. If it keeps hurting, talk to your midwife or GP about a physiotherapy referral.

If the long pillow does not suit your bed

Relvay does not make a long body pillow, so we have nothing for the sofa setup above. If the real problem is that a long pillow took over your bed, the closest thing we sell is the 3-Piece: two small wedges for bump and back, joined by a flat strap, made for side sleeping on your half of the bed. We have not published sitting instructions for it, so we do not suggest it as a sofa cushion. If you want something to hug head to toe, it is not a fit.
