The short answer
Loose filling travels away from the spots you squeeze most, especially in one long tube with no inner sections. Map where it goes, even it out only in the way your maker allows, check the cover fits, and ask the maker if it returns within hours.
- Moved: one end full, total feels the same.
- Flat: thinner everywhere, does not come back.
- Do not: open the insert or add filling.
Every morning, the wrong end is full
This is one of the most common complaints with long, fibre-filled body pillows, and it is different from a pillow going flat. The filling is still there. It is just in the wrong place.
Week 29, 6:05 a.m.
Wren hugged her long pillow every night, knees clamped around the bottom third, bump resting on the middle. By morning the bottom end was round and tight like a bolster, and the middle was a floppy sleeve she could fold in half. She would punch it back into shape, sleep, and wake up to the same thing.
"I thought it was dying," she said. "Then I picked it up and it weighed exactly the same. It had just packed itself into one end."
- If one end gets fuller and fuller while the part you need goes hollow.
- If it has not been washed, so it is not a laundry problem.
- If you are wondering whether to open it and move the stuffing yourself.
Empty in one place is not the same as worn out. The difference changes what you do.
Why does pillow filling travel to one end?
Pressure pushes loose filling toward the parts you squeeze least. If the pillow is one long tube with no stitched sections inside, nothing stops it from travelling.
Where you press. Knees and bump press the same spots every night. Fibre is pushed out from under them toward the ends.
How it is built. Some pillows have stitched channels or separate chambers. A single open tube lets everything slide.
The cover. A cover that is tight at one end squeezes filling out of it. One that is too loose lets the insert fold, and filling gathers in the fold.
Sleepybelly, a pregnancy pillow maker, notes that standard polyester fibrefill tends to shift and clump over time, leaving flat spots where you need support most. That is a description of the material, not of your sleep habits.
The pillow is not failing. It is going where the pressure sends it.
Has the filling moved, or has the pillow gone flat?
Map it twice: once straight out of bed, once after you even it out. If the total stays about the same and only its position changes, it moved. If every zone is lower and stays lower, it is flat.
- Divide the pillow into five zones along its length, with pins or sticky notes on the cover.
- In the morning, lay it flat and measure the height of each zone with a ruler. Take one photo from the side.
- Even it out as described below, wait ten minutes, and measure the same five zones again.
- Repeat for three mornings and note how long it takes for the filling to slide back.
| Your map shows | Likely meaning | Where to go next |
|---|---|---|
| One end high, middle low, evens out again | Filling moving | Keep reading this page |
| All zones lower, does not recover | Going flat | Going flat: wear or problem |
| Hard lumps after a wash | Filling clumped in the wash | Bunched after washing |
How do you move the filling back without opening it?
Check your maker's instructions first, then use only the method they describe. Many makers simply say to fluff the pillow; Leachco, for example, says to fluff a pillow that has clumped or flattened.
- Take the cover off so you can see the insert and feel where the filling sits.
- Lay it flat and knead gently from the full end toward the hollow part, in small handfuls, the way you would spread a sleeping bag.
- Hold it by the full end and shake it a few times so the filling falls toward the middle.
- Refit the cover straight, with no twist and the seams lined up, so it does not squeeze one end.
What not to do: unpick a seam, open an inner zip the maker says to keep closed, add extra stuffing, or warm it with a hairdryer or dryer to "loosen" the fibre. bbhugme, for one, tells owners never to open the inner zip of its pillow. Some pillows do have a zip meant for adjusting filling; use it only if your instructions say so.
A week later
Wren started shaking her pillow down each night and moved her knees a hand-width up and down from night to night. "It still drifts," she said. "But now it is a ten-second job, not a mystery."

Is the cover or the structure the real cause?
Often the cover. Check it before you blame the filling.
- Cover tight at one end: compare the insert's length with the cover's. A cover that shrank in a wash can squeeze filling out of one end.
- Cover much bigger than the insert: the insert folds inside it and filling gathers in the fold.
- Twisted cover: seams spiralling around the pillow pull it out of shape.
- No inner sections: squeeze along the insert. If you feel no stitch lines at all, it is a single tube and will always need some evening out.
- Stitch lines you felt before are gone: an inner seam may have opened. That is a question for the maker.
When is shifting filling a fault to report?
Report it when the filling slides back within a few hours of evening it out, when inner sections seem to have come apart, or when a new pillow does this in its first days.
Send the maker your three-morning map, side photos, the cover and insert measurements, a tag photo and your order number. Ask whether the movement is expected for that model, whether the inner structure is intact, and whether they have their own way to redistribute it. Keep the answer in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my pregnancy pillow filling keep moving to one end?
Pressure from your knees and bump pushes loose fibre toward the ends you press less. A single long tube with no inner sections lets it slide freely, and a tight cover can squeeze it further.
How do I fix filling that has shifted to one end?
Follow your maker's care instructions. Usually that means taking off the cover, kneading the filling back toward the hollow part, shaking it from the full end and refitting the cover straight.
Should I add more stuffing to the empty part?
No. If the total amount feels the same, nothing is missing; it has only moved. Opening the insert to add filling is also hard to undo.
Is shifting filling the same as a flat pillow?
No. Moved filling makes one end fuller and evens out again. A flat pillow is lower everywhere and does not recover after fluffing.
When should I contact the maker?
When filling slides back within hours, inner sections feel like they have come apart, a seam opens, or a new pillow does it in its first days.
If you are replacing a long body pillow
Relvay does not make a long body pillow. We make the 3-Piece: two wedges about 17 inches long, joined by a strap, with no long tube to hug. We do not claim its filling never shifts. If you love wrapping around one long pillow, ours is not that, and a sectioned body pillow may suit you better.
Two wedges for bump and back, joined by a flat strap, about as wide as your torso. Keep a regular pillow between your knees. $79.99, 90-day returns.
Wren's story is a composite based on public posts from pregnant side sleepers whose body pillow filling kept shifting. Names and details are changed.
